SYLLABUS

OBJECTIVES
  • To learn the basic hard and softcover bookbinding techniques.
  • To understand basic materials and tools of bookbinding.
  • To become proficient paper measurers and cutters.
  • To learn about the parts of a book, visual hierarchy, book arts resources, and how to combine written concept with design concept.
  • To understand the process of planning and printing/binding a small edition of books (10).
JUNE 5 - CLASS
  • "Magic" book
  • Matchbook book
  • Tools and materials
  • Cutting and measuring
  • Accordian book family (visual hierarchy project)
  • Pamphlets with pockets
  • Stab bind sewing
  • Signature sewing for next class
Assignments due June 19
  • Choose two of these book forms to create a pair of books with the same or contrasting narrative concepts. One book should use only graphics; the other should use only words.

  • Create and post one blog entry (with at least two photos) for the book projects, describing your thought process, as well as the process of actual book construction (including any discoveries, hurdles, etc.).

  • Create one blog entry writing about an artists book you've found online. Post a picture of it, describe the materials used, and talk about why you like it and why you think it's successful.

  • Write a one-page proposal for what you might do for your final project. We will discuss in detail on the 19th, but feel free to send it to me earlier for feedback.
JUNE 19 - CLASS
  • Cut and bind hardcover stab bind book
  • Cut and bind hardcover journal (using signatures from June 5)
  • Discuss final projects, grading sheet, page design, strategies for multiples
  • Discuss art books, project if time
Assignments

Due weekly:
  • At least one blog post logging your progress on the final project, with photos.
Due July 19 (Monday):
  • Blog entry showing the completion of 10 books, including plenty of photos (overviews and closeups).

  • One physical copy of the book should be in the instructor's hands/UB mailbox by 5 p.m. July 19, along with a one-page reflection on the process and final product.

Note: Grades are due in July 22. Work received late will be docked half a letter grade each day.
